What a pleasure to open this new monthly chapter with you, and with a new year too! Happy New Year to you all! As is becoming the tradition of this blog, we begin this cycle with the Visual Narratives. It is an introduction designed to be accessible to everyone, an artistic parenthesis where I set explicit nudity aside to concentrate on atmosphere, set and pure emotion. Make yourself comfortable, the journey starts here.

The Stuff of Dreams - When costume sculpts time and reinvents the studio space: some very beautiful clothes

Working with a stylist and very beautiful clothes is not simply dressing a model for a shoot: it is bringing a new raw material into the studio. Used to shaping volumes through nothing but the cutting of shadow and light, I approach textile with the same eye as the sculptor facing clay or marble. Each fabric brings its own weight, grain and density.

This series gathers sessions born from intense collaborations with passionate designers. Together, we wanted to build bridges to other eras, between baroque splendour, the rigour of an ancient drape and imaginary worlds. In the studio, the atmosphere changes instantly as soon as a textured creation comes into play. The rustle of heavy velvet, the tension of a structure or the airy fluidity of a silk impose a posture, a singular bearing. The model does not pose: she inhabits a role or a suit of armour, becoming the central actress of a timeless story.

On the technical side, the exercise demands great precision in modelling. Where work on the art of the nude or bare skin calls for a soft, continuous light, fabrics absorb or return highlights in a contrasting way. I had to refine my modifiers and tighten my beams to catch the relief of an embroidery, the weave of a linen or the metallic gleam of an adornment, while preserving the depth of the shadows. There is a constant search for balance between the architectural force of the garment and the dreamlike quality of the scene.

If my approach to art photography often favours the clean line, integrating these costumes lets me explore another narrative: the fabric does not hide, it extends the intention, magnifies the bearing and underlines the intensity of the gaze. These images are the fruit of a shared craft in which the costume becomes the very structure that carries the emotion.
